How to organise a moodboard with useful reference credits
A moodboard should explain a direction rather than collect attractive images indiscriminately. Give each reference a purpose and retain its source so you can revisit it.

A small example to work through
Our original direction brief is a quiet workshop identity: warm paper, one purple accent, simple shapes and generous space. The worksheet contains no third-party images.
| Item | Example | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Warm paper and purple | Describe the palette contribution |
| Shape | Simple rounded forms | Describe the silhouette contribution |
| Type | Clear restrained headline | Describe hierarchy rather than copying lettering |
| Texture | Light paper grain | Record source and permitted use |

Use the blank observation and decision fields to record your own result. These downloads are planning worksheets; they do not load an app project or demonstrate a completed export.
Try it and inspect the result
- Open Moodboard and add a small set of references you may use. Label why each belongs rather than organising by popularity.
- Arrange references by contribution: colour, shape, type or texture. Remove items that send the direction somewhere different.
- Keep a source ledger with creator, original URL and permission note. Test the current board save or export path before treating the canvas as your only copy.
When the result differs
- Board has competing styles
- Choose the direction statement first and remove contradictory references.
- Source link is missing
- Recover the original source before reusing the image beyond reference.
- Need final artwork
- A moodboard supports decisions; reference permission does not automatically grant production reuse.
What this example establishes
This brief and ledger are original worksheets, not an exported board or a licence for external images. Check current persistence in the public alpha and keep references and attribution independently.
