How to test a PDF reader with a short reading checklist
A PDF that opens is only the beginning of a reading check. Review navigation, text selection and the original document before relying on saved reading state.

A small example to work through
Our original three-page reading plan assigns page 1 to the introduction, page 2 to the main argument and page 3 to a summary. Use any short PDF you own; the worksheet is not itself a PDF.
| Item | Example | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Page 1 | Open and return | Record opening position |
| Page 2 | Select a sentence | Distinguish text from a scanned image |
| Page 3 | Navigate back | Check page order and controls |
| Original file | Keep independently | Reading state is not document backup |

Use the blank observation and decision fields to record your own result. These downloads are planning worksheets; they do not load an app project or demonstrate a completed export.
Try it and inspect the result
- Open a short permitted PDF in Librarian. Confirm the page count and inspect the first and last page before beginning a long reading session.
- Try navigation and text selection. A scanned page may be an image; failure to select words does not by itself prove a reader bug.
- Leave and reopen only after retaining your original file. Record whether position or annotations persist in the current browser rather than assuming synchronisation.
When the result differs
- Words cannot be selected
- Check whether the PDF contains a text layer.
- Pages appear blank
- Test another small PDF and distinguish a source-file problem from renderer behaviour.
- Position changed after reopening
- Keep a separate page note until persistence is confirmed in your setup.
What this example establishes
This is a manual reader test plan, not a benchmark of all PDFs or a generated Librarian document. Catalogue availability and file behaviour vary. Reading a file does not grant redistribution rights.
This page supplies a worked example and a review method. It does not report a newly completed end-to-end app test. For current availability and edition details, read the Librarian overview.
